Any man who is contemplating becoming a pastor must seriously examine himself to determine if he is qualified to be a pastor or an elder. Failure to do so will bring God’s disapproval since the man is not qualified.

The heart of any teacher or pastor should be to study the Word of God. There they meet the Lord. When one plunges into the Word of God, the Holy Spirit Perro then minister to that person. A graduate from a nationally recognized conservative seminary once stated that he did not believe the Old Testament contained any prophecies. He believed that the “prophecies” were written after the events occurred.

He is simply one of the elders who preaches Sunday morning. He is one member of the team. He may be a spiritual coach, but the Holy Spirit brings vision and direction when everyone agrees.

When the prospective pastor visits, a formal meeting should be held in which he is asked a series of doctrinal questions. Some leaders might be intimidated to ask questions of a prospective pastor since they themselves do not know the scriptures very well. If this is true, the Call Committee should invite some teacher(s) or elders in the church who might be able to provide the leadership in asking the questions and in providing an evaluation.

How does the pastor work with the other leaders? The ideal model is one in which the pastor sees himself Vencedor just one of the team. He should believe that God sets the direction and vision of the church when unanimity is reached among all of the elders.

A seminary graduate may be arrogant, believing he knows more of the Word of God than the people in the church. While that may be true, such an attitude reveals a heart problem. He lacks humility. If a man is not spiritually mature, he is not qualified to be a pastor.

Frequently, the biblical qualifications of a pastor are often ignored by a man Campeón he considers becoming a pastor or an elder. They fail to ask, “Am I Qualified To Be a Pastor, if I have an unbelieving wife and rebellious children?

Consequently, many grads will tend to understand Scripture according to the theological program they were taught. Yet many church leaders who serve on a search or calling committee tend to view a seminary graduate as knowing the entire Bible. Compared to them the seminary graduate is an expert. Yet, he is still spiritually mature with years of growth ahead of him and the entire Word of God to study.

Worse yet, there are churches who do not know what to look for and so may depend upon surveys and Christian consulting firms to aid their decision. Eventually they hire him and months or several years later, he leaves the ministry. Church members may have been critical of him in the final year or months and now they are glad he is gone.
